BT's new fibre optic broadband provides customers with super-fast surfing speeds of 40mbps from £18 a month. The service has given customers the chance to download films, watch iPlayer and surf the web simultaneously with no interruption or lagging. BT Infinity also boasts the UK's fastest upload speed, at 2Mb with the 40GB download limit or 10Mb with unlimited downloads.

Choosing which of the BT infinity deals is best for you depends on your internet usage habits. However, as super-fast broadband is perfect for downloading music, email attachments and streaming content, there is little reason to opt for a download limit other than to save money. 40GB a month will be just about enough to watch about 12 hours of video (providing you're not using the connection for anything else), so if customers want to make their internet usage count then the limited option will be fine. For more frequent users it may be better to pay the extra for unlimited downloads, especially as the cheaper option comes with an activation fee.

BT also has a fair-use policy, meaning that speeds could slow around peak times or if you're a heavy downloader. Rival provider, Virgin, does not have this policy.

In order to get BT Infinity, you'll need a working BT line which could incur extra costs, although you can save money by opting for BT calls as well as broadband. You can also save money on the first three months of the deal with incentive discounts offered.
Currently, Virgin is the only other provider of super-fast broadband in the UK. Their XXL package offers customers speeds of 50Mbps and costs around £33 a month. However, the fibre optic broadband is not available to everyone yet. BT have pledged to spend £1.5 billion to make their Infinity service available to 40% of the UK. Virgin Media's package is currently available to around 12.5 million homes.

The actual speed of BT's fibre optic service depends on how far a house is from the exchange or a street cabinet. Download speeds could drop as a result of the final connection into homes still being via copper cables, causing a serious deterioration in the connection.

BT have recently created 156 new locations for their fibre-to-the-cabinet service. More than 1.5 million consumer and business premises will be able to connect to the service, as a result of the increase in locations. Around 50 are set to be completed by the summer. Ten of the locations included were part of the 'Race to Infinity' competition, which allowed businesses and residents in an area to vote on to get their exchange updated with new technology. "Our fibre programme is well underway with more than four million premises now able to order a fibre-based broadband service from their chosen supplier," said David Campbell, of Openreach. "We'll continue to work closely with industry and local and devolved authorities around the country in deciding where to deploy the technology next."

Sky broadband has announced plans to increase the value of Marks and Spencer (M&S) vouchers that it offers its new broadband bundle customers. Prospective customers can find isp reviews online.
